Earthforce: How Salesforce is helping the planet while it helps your business!

Social responsibility is something that's very important to us at SkyPlanner, South Florida's premier Salesforce consulting and customization company. We actually happen to be in the process of finalizing our team for the 2015 Miami Marathon, where we'll run in support of the Debbie's Dream Foundation.

Our commitment to social responsibility is a reason why we're extremely proud to be associated with Salesforce , a company that is equally committed to social causes. In fact, it seems like everyday we learn about another initiative Salesforce has undertaken to help make the World a better place. Today we learned about Earthforce, which was launched by the cloud computing leader way back in 2007.

According to a press release from 2007 Earthforce was initially a program founded to offset the nearly 19,700-ton carbon footprint created by its data centers:
"[Earthforce] is an initiative to create a carbon neutral salesforce.com in 2007. In taking important key steps in becoming a carbon neutral corporation, the Salesforce.com Foundation will work to neutralize the effect of salesforce.com's corporate greenhouse gas emissions from its major areas of carbon consumption - its office locations, corporate travel and data centers. This will be done through the strategic purchase of carbon offsets with the help of Clean Air-Cool Planet, NativeEnergy and Conservation International. In taking this first, important step in becoming a carbon-neutral company, salesforce.com and the Salesforce.com Foundation recognize that energy conservation and sustainability are vital parts of doing business in the 21st century.
Marc Benioff said at the time:
"At the Salesforce.com Foundation, we have always been dedicated to social responsibility, and Earthforce is an important initiative to spearhead our efforts to help the environment," said Marc Benioff, chairman and CEO of salesforce.com. "By offsetting our carbon footprint, we are moving further on the path toward sustainability and engaging our community in contributing to effective solutions for the climate crisis."
Since it's initial inception Earthforce has grown into much more. It has become a volunteer force (pun intended) that is dedicated to promoting environmental responsibility in all facets of salesforce.com. They work diligently to promote issues like energy conservation through efficiency, recycling, composting, and commuting practices such as carpooling. But an unintended yet pleasant side effect of Earthforce has been how the common cause has brought together employees who would never have interacted otherwise.

That side effect is also felt here at SkyPlanner. Our commitment to social causes such as Debbie's Dream brings an already close-knit group even closer as we give back to causes bigger than ourselves. How does your company give back to the community and planet as a whole? Let us know in the comments!
